A third technique is to clap the hands, wave the arms, smack the desk top, or snap the fingers for added emphasis, without giving any indication that you have become aware of the counselee’s wandering attention. Sometimes a short pause in midsentence, as though to collect your thoughts, will refocus the counselee’s attention on the task at hand. Still another helpful device is to pause just before completing your sentence, allowing the counselee to helpfully furnish the last word or two for you.
